Azzurri Court Great Nicola Pietrangeli Passes Away at 92

The world of tennis mourns a true icon: Nicola Pietrangeli, a two-time French Open champion, has died at the age of 92.

Pietrangeli etched his name by becoming the first Italian to secure a Grand Slam singles title, earning his maiden triumph at the French Open in 1959 and retaining the coveted trophy a year later.

With a remarkable 48 career titles, Pietrangeli was widely considered the country's finest player until the rise of current star and four-times major winner Jannik Sinner.

"Italian tennis is grieving an icon. Nicola Pietrangeli, the sole Italian honored in the International Tennis Hall of Fame, has passed away," announced the national federation.

In addition to his two French Open successes, Pietrangeli also reached the final in Paris in both 1961 and 1964.

He set a record 164 matches played for Italy in the prestigious team competition, winning 120 of them, and led his country to its inaugural title in 1976.

Organisers of the Italian Open, where he was a two-time winner, commented: "It is with deep sadness that we say goodbye to Nicola Pietrangeli, a veritable legend of Italian tennis..."
