The mood at the Stadio Olimpico was decidedly gloomy during the weekend fixture. The Biancocelesti found themselves behind against Torino, an opponent that had let in 10 goals while netting just two in their last five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with club owner Claudio Lotito.
Was the team's progress coming unstitched, or was there ever a thread maintaining its structure in the first place? Lazio reinstated Maurizio Sarri as manager during the off-season, before he to later acknowledge that the board had not mentioned a registration embargo they were about to receive for financial irregularities. Speculation that he might quit were not true, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "misled" him.
Lazio appeared equally disorganized on the pitch as they were off it, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in their other first five games, including the Rome derby. At any given moment, observers have struggled to determine if they're getting better or self-destructing.
At least one man continued to smile throughout. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to feature for Lazio this year. He completed the last one at Parma as a loanee and, early this summer, Lazio were advocating for him to extend his stay a while longer. The signing restriction led to a change of plans. Lazio could not afford to weaken their team without replacements.
Cancellieri arrived in the first place during Sarri's previous tenure, at that time a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 matches in the league for Lazio in the 2022-23 season, almost all of those from the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who departed after that campaign, would later accuse Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri had superstar potential then never playing him."
It's possible the coach was still trying to work out the specific characteristics of his skill set. Labeled as a wide forward when he joined, Cancellieri yet was deployed for much of that season as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile as center forward. During 63 outings during spells with Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
