Leeds manager Daniel Farke believed Man City shot-stopper Gianluigi Donnarumma simulated an knock in the second half of their top-flight clash
Leeds United manager Daniel Farke has accused Manchester City keeper Gianluigi Donnarumma of simulating a knock to "bend the rules" in their Premier League fixture at Etihad Stadium
The visitors got off to the poorest start with Phil Foden scoring within the opening 60 seconds, prior to Josko Gvardiol doubled the home side's advantage ahead of the half-time break
Nevertheless, Leeds rallied after the break following a change of strategy and formation, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin scoring immediately after the resumption
Furthermore with Manchester City visibly struggling to cope with the changes just before Lukas Nmecha levelled, home goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma went down to get treatment, enabling manager Pep Guardiola to call his team to the sideline and deliver fresh directions during the two minutes the game was stopped for
"Everybody understands why he collapsed," Farke stated
"It is not the elephant in the room. Why he fell it was obvious. It is within the bounds of the regulations. It is clever. If I like it? If it's within the spirit of fair play? If it should be like this I will keep to myself. It is up to the governing bodies to determine a resolution"
"I ask the assistant referee at this point if you wish to take action. Our hands are tied"
"If we don't teach our footballers in the game what to do in terms of fair play and fair play and whatever and if we just attempt to bend the rules and actually do a fake injury in an attempt to do an additional team meeting, it is not what I approve of personally. But if it is within the regulations I have no grounds for complaint"
Phil Foden's stoppage-time winner sent Leeds to a sixth consecutive defeat in seven Premier League matches to place them eighteenth in the Premier League, with only bottom club Wolves having notched fewer Premier League goals this season
However, Farke, who has been criticised for a lack of adventure especially around changes, was almost rewarded for a courageous decision at the interval that nearly reversed their fortunes
Speaking to BBC Match of the Day, Foden, said that his side were only able to reorganize after Pep Guardiola's sideline meeting with his players
"At half-time we were in command. Second half they came out, pressed us a lot more aggressively, they put a pair up top and altered the formation a little bit," said Foden
"We genuinely struggled to get hold of the game. We got together on the side of the field and changed a few things and it improved from there. That little break was crucial to get things right"
The most recent time Leeds suffered four straight successive top-flight matches was in the 2022-23 season, when their campaign ended with relegation
However, while Farke stated that "their main emotion is disappointment", their second-half display offered enough evidence to indicate they are capable of arresting their current form and climbing back up the standings
"Displaying such a display should give us lots of confidence. If we show such determination and togetherness we have a great chance to earn the results," Farke added
"We possessed the belief prior to the game, throughout the fixture and following the game. Or else you cannot respond with a showing like that. We have great togetherness and fighting spirit in the dressing room"
Commenting on BBC Radio 5 Live, ex- Celtic forward Chris Sutton said: "Everyone anticipated it to be a comfortable victory for City, but it has been far from comfortable in this second half"
"Leeds can derive a lot from this display with the way they have played in this second period"
"Then came Daniel Farke's adjustments, who is frequently criticised for not being as responsive as he ought to be. Dominic Calvert-Lewin came on and roughed up the Manchester City defenders"
"It appeared like it could be a massive turning point in Leeds United's campaign, but Manchester City discovered a bit of brilliance. They escaped with one this evening"
