Authorities in the island state are working to identify a rosy sludge that has materialized on a isolated coast, with some scientists anxious it could be an algae outbreak.
The pink-tinged sludge materialized across a portion of a coastal area about 60km south of the city. A similar sludge has also been noted on areas of a nearby shore and an additional coastal site.
Samples have been collected and provided to the regulatory body for testing. A spokesperson commented that "algal blooms are a normal phenomenon in reaction to shifts in food sources, warmth, precipitation or illumination".
"These blooms are sometimes called reddish tides because the outbreaks can color the water crimson," the spokesperson added. "Only some algae outbreaks are harmful, with several kinds acting as a key source of food for animals in the marine food web."
"The most common cause of red tides in these seas is the oceanic algae Noctiluca scintillans, which can produce glowing light shows at night."
Phytoplankton proliferations happen naturally but their occurrence has grown in the past few years, in part due to environmental shifts and environmental waste that merge to create mineral-filled seas geared for the quick expansion of dinoflagellates.
Dinoflagellates are a phytoplankton species that typically function as the ocean's detritus consumers. During a proliferation, there is a quick expansion in their populations that disrupts the healthy balance of ecosystems.
These occurrences have been equated with underwater bushfires and can continue to grow as long as conditions are ripe. In worse situations, delicate ocean habitats can be destroyed as marine life is destroyed or deprived of oxygen, supplying more food for the proliferation.
Another region not long ago grappled with a devastating algae outbreak along its southern shore after a succession of marine heatwaves, which expanded across thousands of square kilometres. The bloom left surfers with eye irritation and severe coughing and may have eliminated up to a quarter-million sea creatures across numerous types, according to agency assessments.
An estuarine ecologist, who was involved in studying the start of South Australia's outbreak said, based on photos of the local event, the most likely species involved was Noctiluca scintillans, a form of dinoflagellate also known as "marine shimmer".
"We have seen many of these outbreaks around the island of late," she remarked.
The expert stated this organism did not create harmful substances comparable to the organism involved in that harmful algal bloom, but it does consume microscopic animals and "numerous fish eggs", meaning aquatic creatures were most at risk.
"Typically one notices a bloom of this algae after a bloom of another organism, or something like a salmon or coral spawning event," she noted.
A campaigner, who took samples of the magenta ooze in Tasmania, stated it seemed the possible outbreak had "increased notably" and indicated the aquaculture sector was the probable cause, citing comparable events elsewhere.
"Therefore we needs to issue a firm alert here, the officials and the environmental agency need to act to this. We need to study the samples we've collected and we need to notify the community here," she stated.
Henley expressed she had anxieties for community health after feeling a numbness along her limbs and skin while being splashed with affected seawater.
An conservation group has documented lifeless animals and dead sea cucumbers being found on the beach, with a veteran activist labeling the event as an "environmental emergency" and demanding the state premier to see and "assume command the effort that government must be doing".
"He needs to know this is a crisis in the happening, financially as well as environmentally."
Addressing journalists, the leader commented he was not aware of any connections between the event and the aquaculture sector, emphasizing expert examination was necessary before determinations could be made.
"We need to ensure our aquatic environments are ecologically sound and sustainable," he remarked.
"Numerous shorelines across the state are our treasures and we need to ensure the community and our economy can live together to enjoy our aquatic resources productively and responsibly."
